As an extension of the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Kranji Marshes is home to an expansive bio-diversity of plants and wildlife. Within this context, the Urban Redevelopment Authority called for submissions to develop a nature enhancement proposal for both the preservation of the wetlands and their enhancement as an educational nature destination for enthusiasts.
Referencing the Biodiversity Impact Statement and inception concept plan, the scheme was to provide simple, practical, environmentally sustainable shelters without greatly disturbing the terrain. The emphasis was on a minimal footprint whilst embracing rejuvenation of the existing ponds and replenishing the plant life.
Two primary shelters were proposed – a visitor meeting station with facilities, and a visitor centre – at either end of the natural trail, linking the pedestrian friendly cultural trail, with the sensitive and preserved ecological zone.
